Expenditure per Student

In 2002, the UK spent just above the OECD total per student on HE. Again, it lies behind Scandanavia, the USA and Australia here, as the below graph demonstrates.

The downward trend in spending on HE has, however, also manifested itself in a fall in EPS throughout the decade of the 1990’s—as the following figures from the September 20th edition of the Times Higher Education Supplement demonstrate.

Despite increased HE funding from 1995-2002, expenditure per student has remained relatively stable in the UK as student numbers rise.

What the graph below demonstrates is that perceived less economically prosperous countries are now rapidly investing in HE to secure economic development – Greece, Turkey and Poland all providing good examples.
