Statistics on Higher Education

Welcome to the OxCHEPS Statistics Home Page

It is the mission of OxCHEPS to improve understanding of higher education by challenging existing thinking and received wisdom in higher education policy-making; and, on the basis of a rigorous programme of applied comparative research and consultancy successfully linking theory and practice in higher education, to generate an informed debate on topical higher education issues.

In this section of the OxCHEPS website we seek to make available statistical data for comparative research.

Data on these pages has been collected from various different sources – HEFCE, HESA, UUK, AUT, NATFHE, NUS, The Times Higher Education Suplement, The Russell Group, the Dearing Report, the Greenaway Report, the Bette Report, OECD, UNESCO, etc. It is our hope eventually to add comparative data from other countries particularly the EU and the USA, and, where possible, we have begun to do so now.

At an even more basic level we seek to provide quantitative information, both historical and current, gathered from various sources on six core subjects which we believe will be of use to HE management.

For the most basic, all round look at HE Statistics, please take a look at the most recent UUK Statistics Information:

http://bookshop.universitiesuk.ac.uk/downloads/facts_05.pdf

This provides a quick and easy look at the principal issues in HE, including funding, structure and participation.

These six core subjects are::

 1 History/Size/Shape/Structure

 2 Funding

 3 Expenditure per Stude/FTE

 4 Access

 5 Academic Salaries

 6 Quality and Standards (Including the QAA and RAE)

These pages are not exhaustive – anyone wanting to know more can access any of the websites or publications of UUK, HEFCE, HESA and so on.

The statistics page was updated in late 2006 – please contact Ben Wheeler with issues, queries or errors: benjmwheeler@googlemail.com
